The purpose of this workshop is to enhance the professional grasp on data-driven instruction and how to cultivate this instructional process as a school-wide initiative. As a result of attendance and active participation in this workshop, teachers will be immersed in a training series that will allow them to understand what data driven instruction entails and how to properly foster a learning environment that is created through true engagement of student data. Teachers will be acclimated to the processes and procedures of dissecting data through a wider lens. The data driven instruction session will give teachers the tools needed to understand holistically how to dissect data and use it to compliment not only instruction but student achievement as well.

Reading difficulties represent one of the most common issues in schools. Evaluation of students with reading problems and generations of intervention plans have become a bit in demand in teaching. In this workshop, discussion will be centered around both formal (standardized or product-oriented) and informal (process-oriented) measures of reading assessments. Formal measures include state testing and school district testing. Informal measures include diagnostic reading tests such as Marie Clay’s Concepts about Print and Running Records, Slosson’s Phonics and Structural Analysis Test, Slosson’s Intelligence Test. Other area tests will also be covered such as reading inventory, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension tests. At the end of the session, there will be a brief discussion of Blooms Taxonomy, a practical approach for enhancing students’ critical thinking.

The purpose of this workshop is to engross teachers in several activities that will stimulate active thought about their prospective subject area from the student learning viewpoint. Understanding metacognition and how to make it applicable to the instructional process will be explored. The pedagogical practice will be examined and an in-depth dissection of using how people think will be prescribed to maximize student learning and to enhance the instructional process.

Anchor charts build a culture of literacy in the classroom, as teachers and students make thinking visible by recording content, strategies, processes, cues, and guidelines during the learning process. Posting anchor charts keeps relevant and current learning accessible to students to remind them of prior learning and to enable them to make connections as new learning happens. Students refer to the charts and use them as tools as they answer questions, expand ideas, or contribute to discussions and problem-solving in class

This workshop will highlight the benefits of having anchor charts in your classroom. Participants will be actively engaged while expressing their creativity. They will also make and take anchor charts with them so that they can be readily used in the classroom.

PBS Learning Media Teacher Tools: Lesson Builder and Storyboard

Teachers will engage in hands-on activities as they explore two specific PBS Teacher Tools: (1) the Lesson Builder and (2) the Storyboard Project. The Lesson Builder, the first tool, enables teacher to combine videos, images, and documents from PBS Learning Media with an online, interactive quiz. The second tool, the Storyboard, taps into teachers’ creativity and ability to illustrate a concept or topic using a collection of PBS Learning Media videos, text and images.
